A day in the life of The Cyclery – Opus @ UBC Gran Prix.

We raced the UBC Gran Prix. A new course from last year, so instead of a 180 turn we had a climb that snaked its way along and a ripping fast descent on the other side. The team was aggressive with good positioning and attacks; however, nothing was able to get away leaving the race up for the sprinters in the end. It was hard throughout, and we always come away having learned something new, something we can put to use at the next race.

But enough about the race, because you should know about things we do outside of the race. So let’s start with this morning:

We go for an easy spin each morning, and where better to stop than a coffee shop. Beach Grove Cafe was our choice stop and it had lovely scarves and nice smelling soaps as well.

After the morning spin, we all return to our humble host homes and relax for a few hours. Recovery can come in many different forms for each person. Some like to have naps, some like to watch a movie, and some of us also still have work to do for school or our jobs. We also get food into our bellies and prep the pre and post-race eats.

Jenny and Chris have a wonderful little fella, Camden, who is adored by everyone. He keeps us distracted from feeling nervous before a race and helps put a smile on our faces too! Team meetings have laughing breaks when he says or does something funny.

After the post-race spin and debrief, Annie and I sauntered toward a BBQ where hot dogs were being cooked. Let’s just say that though it won’t become a ritual, it was the absolute most delicious thing (at that time). Hot dogs are not just for baseball games!

And that is a bit about our day before and after a race. We were able to enjoy a lovely sunset on the drive home. Annie and I listened to some Ace of Base and belted the lyrics to Adele’s Set Fire To The Rain.
